Torch
Thanks to friend, & Q Grader, Jen Martinez, We stumbled in some of Torch's offerings after coffee expo 2024. At the time, we were not actively looking for additions to our menu, but were blown away by the cupping table and knew we had to select an offering. Along with a few other origins, Torch provides some of the most incredible coffees from China and Kenya that we've ever tasted. Their intention in design, offerings and commitment to quality has been a perfect fit to our importing lineup. Big shout out to their whole team, including Aaron and Moses, who make working in this industry equally as meaningful and fun. Torch is the real deal, we know you'll enjoy their work!
This coffee hails from the Karagatha Coffee Estate, where it was processed at the estate’s own washing station. Sitting at an elevation of 1,500 to 1,600 meters, this microclimate is perfect for nurturing high-quality Arabica varietals like SL28, SL34, Ruiru 11, and Batian—each contributing to Karagatha’s distinct character.
Our current lot was sourced from the Nairobi Coffee Exchange, where it was auctioned by Torch Coffee. While we’re proud to feature it, this coffee also marks a transition for us. The traditional Kenyan auction system—while historically important—has become increasingly problematic for producers, limiting traceability and equitable returns. At Makeworth, we’re committed to moving toward direct trade relationships that provide more transparency and impact. In fact, our next two Kenyan coffees will be direct trade naturals—a step we’re excited to share more about soon.
Unlike the washed coffees typically associated with Kenya, Karagatha is honey processed, a method where some mucilage is left on the beans during drying. This results in a cup that balances lively acidity with a rounded sweetness and syrupy mouthfeel.
In the cup, you’ll discover:
Citrus brightness—think mandarin and Meyer lemon
A layer of silky caramel sweetness
Gentle, warming notes of vanilla
This combination makes Karagatha incredibly versatile—bright and juicy enough for a pour-over, yet structured and comforting as an espresso or in milk-based drinks.
