The Producer

There's a farm in Três Corações, in the south of Minas Gerais, named after a grandmother. When Cláudia Ribeiro Rezende acquired the land in 1998, she gave it the name Maria Celeste; a quiet tribute to her husband Flávio's grandmother, who kept watch over the property from the beginning.

Cláudia has been farming coffee since 1985. What started alongside Flávio has grown into something bigger: their children Júlia and Túlio now run operations with them, carrying four decades of care into the next generation of the farm.

At 1,100 meters in Sul de Minas, Fazenda Maria Celeste grows Bourbon Amarelo -- one of the most celebrated varieties to come out of Brazil -- alongside Catucaí Amarelo and Mundo Novo. The farm is fully mechanized and produces around 7,000 bags a year, but the attention to quality that's earned Cláudia recognition in Minasul's annual competition doesn't show up in the numbers. It shows up in the cup.
